Semur-en-Auxois - 15 June 2019
Tintin drove on a very straight road to Semur-en-Auxois. Tourist Office provided us with a map and a guided tour around the town. Uninspiring really with nothing open to look at, and it wasn’t even lunchtime!
15.06.19 - Avocado salad for tea - then chocolate later! Tintin had a headache for most of the day, so when he went to bed, I stayed up until after midnight to finish my book. Three books in one, over 1,000 pages so pleased it’s finished - it’s very heavy to hold! Yet again, it rained from early evening and long into the night. It’s noisy on Dave’s roof, but quite soporific!
Slow start to the day, scrubbing out the shower etc as we knew we’d be filling up with water at next place.
Tintin felt the need to drive again! Think the Romans had been here, just long straight roads. Took under an hour, and we’re parked in an Aire at Semur-en-Auxois.
Still using up some frozen seeded bread rolls from Germany for lunch - they don’t freeze and defrost very well!
Walked into town, were a bit early for the tourist information (opens at 2pm after lunch!) so went into the church. Was constructed between 1220 and 1450 and has Gothic architecture. An English couple were studying a stained glass window, and she explained her name was Barbara - and the scene was about Saint Barbara. She said you read the panes from the bottom left, next row up to the right, next row up to the left etc. They were stories for people who couldn’t read!
Picked up the walking tour map. We somehow expected more! It has a * in the guide book! There were so few people around. Looked like the town needs a capital injection of dosh - lots of closed places and ramshackle. I know it’s a medieval hilltop town perched on a granite spur, so allowed to look, well, old - but huge buildings are left unoccupied - a bit sad really.
Lovely views from the ramparts, and don’t bridges always look good with reflection on the water!
We’d changed into jeans, took our fleeces, coats and umbrellas - but it felt humid - and didn’t rain!
Walked for a couple of hours, now back at Dave. Not quite Billy - as there’s one other moho in this huge space!
Well done Herc for once again completing the Saffery Rotary walk around Guernsey walk, and also Sarah and Stevie who provided company and encouragement around the coast. Enjoy the ball tonight!
