Travelling to Cornwall - 13th to 16th April 2023
It’s very evident that the one thing we don’t have control over is the weather - and living on an island sometimes causes a problem…
We were due to travel on the Commodore Clipper to Portsmouth on the evening of 12 April. We were going, then not, then going, then not! Storm Noa had other ideas. We were told the next availability was the 19 April - after our ferry to Ireland!
13 April 2023 - In the end, we had a calm crossing just the following morning on the Commodore Goodwill. We arrived after a 9 hour slow journey. We were the only passengers, and passed the time walking around outside on the deck or reading.
We were due to meet the lovely Jo first thing in the morning - but had to do with a brief cuppa late afternoon in a random Sainsbury’s carpark. We then drove for a couple of hours towards our Cornwall destination. The lights on Dave - despite being upgraded by Tintin - weren’t brilliant, so just after dusk found a good, quiet place near Bridport to park up for the night.
14 April 2023 - We set off just after it was light, Tintin drove first - not that pleasant - wet and raining. I took over for the final hour, as I need to get used to driving Dave again. It’s fair to say my brain wasn’t in gear (as it were!) at first, as I’d changed my car at home to an automatic - so not used to driving a manual again!
We’re visiting family - Jamie, Bel and Jack for a few days. We arrived mid morning, then Jamie drove us to Porthleven for a look around and lunch at The Ship Inn for some good traditional pub food.
Jamie had spent the day previously preparing Tom Kerridge’s lasagne - which we ate for tea - was delicious - but Jamie is far more patient than I am when following long recipes!
15 April 2023 - In the morning we walked down to the beach at Porthtowan and played frisbee for a while. Jamie whizzed off and bought us pasties for lunch - just needs to be done whilst in Cornwall! In the afternoon, Bel had booked us tickets to see the Wide Awake Rogue theatre production in Tehidy Woods. All sat on straw bales, being educated about being eco friendly to help the animals. Adult content in the words, but children entertained by the animal characters and dancing.
From there, we went to the Dynamite Valley Brewery - a beer cafe - it was packed on a warmer, nearly sunny Saturday afternoon. Please see jamiedumont.com for information about the brewery and the brewing process
Was really good fish and chips from St Agnes on the way home.
We’re only sleeping in Dave at present, so not really into the whole experience of living in him - will be a shock to the system of having less space again!
16 April 2023 - Tintin is getting more lessons from Jamie about using our website - all a learning experience for us!
Went for a trot around the cliffs to ‘Sally’s Bottom’, seeing old tin mines on the way. Jack spotted three seals. Saw some swallows, and three friendly horses.
Our resident chef, Jamie is currently cooking a roast, which is smelling delicious.
We’ll leave here tomorrow morning for a full day of driving (over 300 miles), as we need to get to Fishguard in readiness for our ferry to Rosslare on Tuesday - and will write again in a few days…
