13.10 - Zamora
Last night in Béjar was actually surprisingly quiet considering all the dogs!
As it was due to be sunny, and we knew we could get more water at the next Aire - we put our towels into soak for the journey…
Me driving today - about 1-3/4 hours. From Béjar towards Salamanca the roads were awful. You know the tv programme - SAS - Who Dares Wins? They put the candidates in stress positions, and make them listen to crying babies or whatever - maybe a drive on really bumpy roads in a moho would do!
After Salamanca (visited here in 2018) - the roads thankfully improved. However, all the roads so far in Spain have been free 😊
We’re at Zamora. Population 63,217. The free aire has space for 40 mohos, but the reviews on Park4night frequently complain about the number of cars here too - and they’re here today - but luckily enough space for us.
I rinsed out and spun the towels - whilst Tintin had to clear the front of Dave again. So many splatted insects again.
After a quick lunch, we walked to the castle, as it was due to close at 2pm - don’t know why - as it’s free to enter. It’s an aesthetically restored castle of 11th century origin. Good to climb the tower and walk around the ramparts for a good view.
Also quite a few sculptures dotted around.
The largely Romanesque cathedral is nearby, it has an ugly square tower, but an unusual Byzantine style dome surrounded by turrets. It was closed!
Walked to the look out point. Lovely in the sunshine.
From there wandered around. There were at least three huge churches, very ornate in their own right - but overshadowed by everything else!
Stopped off in the main square for a drink - €5.
Again, evidence of storks - but didn’t see any actual birds…
Didn’t feel like a long walk - but 8,500 steps - and our towels are dry again!
Good FaceTime catch up with J, Bel and Jack.
So happy that the weather has been warm and sunny - about 19/20° - perfect for walking around. All in all, seems a clean and calm town.
